Subject: Gifts for Charity

Comment: Hi! I'm 63 and have been crocheting since I was in my twenties. Recently, my brother was diagnosed with throat cancer and I accompanied him to his treatments. I found out that the cancer center gives gift baskets to its families at Christmas, so I made a big afghan in a popcorn pattern. The social worker really loved it but she called me later and said, "Do you know what one of our workers said when she saw your afghan? She said, 'Do you know how many HOURS it takes to make those popcorns? About a million!!'" I thought it was funny, but it was nice to have someone appreciate the time it takes to make something. I agree with your visitors who say that crocheting is good therapy. I certainly agree!

Subject: Crocheting for dolls

Comment: I am 12 years old and I love crocheting. I have two American Girl dolls and I love buying clothes for them, but after awhile I decided that the clothes were too expensive, and I started making my own. I now have a business for my doll clothes, and I have written many patterns for them. And I know this site helped me a lot. Thank you so much! God bless!

Subject: My mother's favorite afgan

Comment: When I first began crocheting, I bought countless number of books with patterns and designs. My Mother liked to look through them with me as I brought them to her house to show what I was working on. There was one particular afgan my Mother fell in love with. It was an extremely complex pattern with over 7 different stitches in it and included even cross stitched lettering around the border which spelled out "Roses are red, Violets are blue. Sugar is sweet, and so are you".

Seeing as how Mom really loved it, I set my mind to creating the blanket for her for the following christmas. I did not count on just how complex the stitches and pattern was though and it took me 8 months to complete. I gave it to her on Mother's Day instead of Christmas. The look of surprise, love and adoration was worth every sore finger and long night I had gone through.

Last year, Mom was diagnoised with lung cancer. Every day she was in the hospital and every time she went in for treatments, Mom took the afgan I made with her. She said that it was warmer than any other blanket she was offered. Nurses, doctors and visitors alike "oohhed and awwed" over it. Mom said it took her mind off her pain and the treatments to show my afgan off and point out the stitches and work that went into the making of it. I was just glad to see how happy it made Mom.

My Mom died last month and as we went through her things, my daughters and I found the afgan. Tears welled in my eyes as I caught my Mother's scent and my children talked of "Mammow's blankie" and how much she loved it. I brought it home and have sealed it into a protective bag. On the long nights when I miss my Mother the most, I bring it out, snuggle beneath it and breath in my Mother's scent which still clings to the yarn. One day I will pass the afgan along to my oldest daughter who will treasure it as much as Mom and I have.

Crochet is not just a hobby or a way of passing away time. It can be an art that can create heirlooms and priceless treasures.

Comment: I love to crochet. Even though I am only 13 years old, I have made a felted hat, a bag, a scarf, and a skull cap in the time when I am not in school and don't have to worry about homework. I love your site because I can go here whenever I want to make something without worrying about going to the bookstore and finding the right pattern. I really wanted to thank you for the site and everything you put on it. :)

Comment: Well, my home ec teacher at the pregnancy school taught me to crochet. Its the funniest thing i wanted to make a layette set and she gave me this yarn and told me how to stitch the hat. Well this hat turned out bigger than my head. I went to her and said hey i followed the pattern just like you told me what happened. She said oh my i forgot its the wrong yarn for babies. i was upset but now i laugh about it 27 years later and many other mistakes made. hope you enjoy.

Subject: Thank You

Comment: I have been using this site for the last few years. Mostly, I enjoy looking but have tried a few of the doll crochet items. I learned to crochet when I was 5 or 6 years old from my grandmother. I think I made a chain that would go around the house. Later, I taught myself to read instructions and expand my knowledge.

Subject: In the Round 6 inch block

Comment: Let me tell ya, TRUST YOURSELF! I can not say that enough. I just finished my very first attempt at a square. I usually crochet across in one stich, row after row after row (makes for a very sturdy blanket!) and have always dreamed of actually doing a square. So I picked the "In the Round 6 inch block" because I liked the consistency of it. I re-read and re-read the instructions about a gazillion times (more like 4) and still found myself completely overwhelmed. So I said to myself, "what the hay! If they want a dc 5x's in a row, just do it!" At first, I couldn't see it. It didn't feel right. I thought I was doing everything way too loose. But let me tell you LOOSE IS YOUR FRIEND! Needless to say, the square was an amazing success. It took a while but I did it! I just finally gave in to the directions and had trust in myself!

Subject: Therapy of Crocheting

Comment: I do a lot of crocheting and use it as a therapy while in the hospital or during a very trying period with my health. I only do fine crocheting, except for the occasional stuffed toy and one dress that I thought was gorgeous for a pharmacy technician's new baby girl. As you can probably tell I spend a tremendous amount of time at the hospital and would go crazy without my crocheting, knitting, tatting and cro-tatting of doilies to keep my sanity and spirits up. I taught myself all methods of producing doilies, tablecloths and other pieces as no one else I know can do any of these crafts. I have been approached by nurses to sell my items at craft shows for me and I am considering adding that to my distribution of my work.

My words are "don't let anyone talk you out of doing your craft or hobby" regardless of what it is.

Subject: keep on crocheting

Comment: I did not know anyone to help me learn to crochet. Sooo I made many BOO!!bOO!But I was determined to get the hang of it. I am glad I did. (I think I have been crocheting since around my late 30's and I am in my middle 70;s now.) I re=married and thru my husband I have many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Being on Social Security does not give you loads of money to buy gifts for them. Now that I crochet I have gifts that they all enjoy. I make ponchos. (easy to put on the babies)toys that are so cuddly and the babies can play with them for they are so soft. So if you want an enjoyable hobby this is it.

Subject: 30 years and counting!

Comment: I began crocheting when I was 8,amazing,30years ago. I am not an expert,.but ppl say so. I crochet shirts, just started crocheting bikinis for my daughter, and made crocheted g-string panties for myself. It was easy,i got a pair of panties from wal-mart,crocheted the crotch part and added the elastic.I sometimes crochet over the elastic, sometimes not.I love it! I knit, too, but prefer to crochet. My kids save all I have made, what for,I don't know.I put charms on the bikini tops, and my daughter, and her friends love them! I have not sold any work, because I don't feel that confident.I love yarn, and love the feeling I get when starting a new pattern.I stockpile patterns/yarn for projects to keep me busy,as I am a stay at home mom of 3

Subject: The Beginning

Comment: When I was a very young girl, my maternal grandmother used to crochet all the time. She made doilies, arm chair covers and covers for the back of the chairs and couch. When I was about 6, she made me lie on the floor on top of old newpaper and she traced me. Little did I know that she was going to create a crocheted dress for me. Not only did she create a beautiful dress, but she made colored satin underslips for it, too. I didn't start to crochet until I was about 10, and I picked it up from watching my grandmother. I even taught myself how to read patterns. Forty some years later, I am still crocheting doilies, ponchos, baby blankets, etc. and loving it. Crocheting is a wonderful hobby and I find that most people prefer hand made items than those bought in a store. I love your sight and have made some of your patterns. This is the best site I've seen.

Subject: Long Time Crocheter

Comment: I have been crocheting for 25 years now and still at it. I have made many things for myself, my home, gifts, Even do it for money. Yes I also sell my items. People would see what I am doing and the next thing I know they are paying for one. I remember when I was about 10 years old and was told by my mom I would never be able to learn crocheting because I am LEFT handed. I crochet left handed. Well, I was inspired to prove my mom wrong. And over the years she wanted me to make things for her, since I am a much better crocheter then her. I just finished making her a blanket with pillow shams to match. Took about a month, but I made it. Now at this time I am going for lessons to be a certified crochet instructor. Since I also teach. But having a certificate would make me feel more proud. Lefties don't be left out!!! Happy Crocheting!!
