Try using it as fringe on a scarf or bag or knot peices together to create a long multicolored strand of yarn you can use to crochet something bold. Monday, September 20, 2010Name: rosemary Subject: storage Comment: buy a shoe bag hanger. they hold a ton of shoe and have a zipper. perfect for storing your yarn and seeing quickly what you have in stock Saturday, September 18, 2010Name: Cindi Subject: Crocheting with Cats Comment: Do you have a cat that is always playing with your yarn when you knit or crochet? Next time you are at the Grocery Store & see that one of those plastic containers that holds the wipes to disinfect your grocery cart is empty, ask a checker if you can have it to hold your yarn while you knit or crochet. I put my yarn in one of these large plastic containers & run the strand out the top & now my cat can't get to my yarn as easily now! & you have saved this container from the landfill! Saturday, September 18, 2010Name: Cindi Subject: Crocheting in the Car Comment: I like to crochet or knit while my partner drives back & forth to our Craft Fairs each week. When it's dark I use an LED headlamp sold at the hardware store. This miners-type headlamp keeps the light on my work & doesn't bother him while he drives. It's much better than the lighted crochet hook I tried because the light stays away from his eyes! Friday, September 17, 2010Name: Serena Subject: keeping track Comment: I have found that the small counters for keeping track of how much you spend at the grocery store work great for keeping track of the rows worked. At the end of each row you simply push the button to click the number. They are small and fit nicely into whatever crochet bag you are using. Friday, September 17, 2010Name: Serena Subject: storage Comment: I have been crocheting for 22 years and love it more all the time. My husband thinks I actually "collect" yarn and patterns since I have so many. (over 700 patterns last count). I purchased a small file cabinet and hanging folders to store all of my patterns in. I keep them in sheet protectors and they stay nice. I keep my yarn in plastic storage containers but am always looking for something that has easier access. Friday, September 17, 2010Name: crochetnammie Subject: patterns storage Comment: Like many others I get a ton of patterns off of the internet. My son bought me a flash drive and I love it!! Not only does it hold tons of patterns, but i can take them with me any where I go. I also scan patterns into my computer to keep them on the flash drive. Just print off the pattern when you need it. Tuesday, September 14, 2010Name: Liz Subject: Yarn storage Comment: I have quite a bit of extra yarn from various projects and could not find a good way to store it. I finally bought a plastic shelf which cost around $25 and now have a wonderful way to not only store my yarn but easy to see what I have and easy access as well. Monday, September 13, 2010Name: Jessica P Subject: on the go storage Comment: If I plan to crochet away from home, I'll toss what I need-ball of yarn, hook, scissors and pattern- into a cute gift bag and go! The flat bottom of the bag keeps my ball from rolling and I have space to keep a little snack too! Sunday, September 12, 2010Name: Charly Subject: yarn tainer Comment: my mom got me this really cool thing for my knitting and crocheting. its called a yarn tainer. its kind of like a water/juice jug abd it keeps your yarn neat clean and organized while knitting or crocheting and when not knitting or crocheting you just open the flap and put your needles or hook and work in the yarn tainer with the ball and close the flap. it keeps your animals from rubbing over your ball of yarn and having if rolling away and keeping them from ruining it when your not using it at the moment. it also goes everywhere with you. you can find one at www.snapware.com Tuesday, August 24, 2010Name: Cindy Subject: Big Balls of Yarn Comment: I have some large balls of yarn that tend to take up too much room in drawers or baskets. I bought a new quilt a month or so ago and wanted to use the plastic zipper bag it came in but couldn't think what. It's a nice big size so I didn't want to waste it. Then I thought of the large balls of wool. It's amazing how many I got in there. I can store them now and not have to worry about dust or dirt or space. It was a win/win solution. Saturday, August 21, 2010Name: Alice Subject: hook storage Comment: Hi!!! I'm 11 and I really like crocheting! I always seemed to lose my hooks in the past until, one day I found a perfect pencil case to stash them in.Now I can find all my hooks easily.Problem solved!:) Saturday, August 21, 2010Name: maggie Subject: hooks Comment: to make it more comfortable on my hands i use one of those pencil cushions on my crochet hook Friday, August 20, 2010Name: Ms A Subject: Weaving threads Comment: when weaving threads through, if the thread end is too short, weave your needle through leaving the eye exposed, then thread your wool into it and finish pulling the needle through. That way the wool only has to be as long as a few stitches Friday, August 13, 2010Name: Alisa Subject: extra yarn storage Comment: I often purchase yarn on sale at the end of seasons, or clearance and yes even at thrift store and yard sales. I have so much yarn I usually don't have to purchase when I start a project on a whem. That being said, I have tried a laundry basket, a space bag, etc. nothing that has been convient at storing and viewing excess yarn with out digging through the bags and tangling it together (I always have yarn rolled). Finally Ihave found something that has really worked for me. I took a clear plastic and canvas shoe organizer that slips under the bed. It holds the bulk of my yarn and I can see what I have at a quick glance. Thank goodness I have a king size bed so there is room for my shoes on the other side. lol Select A Page Share your own hints by filling in the form below...
