Did a lot of crocheting things like afghans as a kid, but let it slip away once I got to college. I finally started really crocheting again a few years ago when my daughter and her cousins wanted ponchos. Since then I have found this site and used many patterns as starting points for my work. Started making baby blankets for my mom to give to friends and relatives too and even used the blanket Grama made for my daughter as a pattern for one I made for a cousin's new baby. I've even won ribbons at the county fair for my crocheting. Pretty good for someone who still holds her crochet hook funny nearly 40 years after Grama taught me to do a chain stitch, ripple and granny square. Name: susan Subject: teacher Comment: I teach crochet here in Ks. I always tell the people I teach about your site. They all love it. One of the groups I teach are military wives. Your patterns have helped them make time go by a little quicker while husbands are deployed. Thank You Name: Pamela Subject: Crochet in the islands Comment: I have been crocheting for more years than I care to admit. I live in the Caribbean and don't have much use for blankets, scarves or ponchos. Also, yarns are hard to find here. My friends are constantly amazed at what you can do with butchers twine (great rug material), jute (wonderful free form baskets) and even, lately, plastic shopping bags which make useful door mats, reusable shopping bags (cuts into your raw material though:-) and beach bags. Old clothes cut into strips make rag rugs. Have even made an interesting hammock using palm fronds split and braided for yarn. Keep an open mind when you are looking for a new project. Name: Donadenese Subject: So nice to be here... Comment: I have been knitting and crocheting for years...I still remember my Nana Bea teaching me how to make slippers (the ones with the pom-poms on top)when I was a little girl. Anyway, I just had to say that I have never felt surrounded by more wonderful and generous people as I am while browsing though the pages of Crochet Pattern Central. I love you all!! Name: Julia Subject: gifts Comment: Once I was in a craze of knitting (before I learned how to crochet) and wanted to make a present for my friend's birthday. I tried to make some earmuffs, but they wouldn't keep their shape. So I just gave her a giftcard. The next time she came over, she saw the abandoned earmuffs and asked me if I had made them. I said yes and that I was going to give them to her, but didn't think she would like them. To my surprise, she picked them up and asked me if she could have them. She still does! Name: ~Renee~ Subject: CROCHET Comment: Hi, I am a Late Bloomer, I taught myself to Knit and to crochet by doing alot of searches for stitches online- I Find it very relaxing, and even though I can not hardly read some of the patterns out there LOL I am however able to look at a stitch and do it for some odd reason :) You might say crocheting keeps me sane with all the things going on out there in the world :) Name: Juanita Subject: crocheting Comment: When making anything that has a duplicate, such as sleeves, I always make both at the same time. First I do a little on one and then the same amount on the second until both are finished. Booties are especially hard to keep even in size unless done in this fashion. Name: Julia Subject: teaching Comment: Hi, I'm Julia and I'm eleven years old. I taught myself to crochet from some books a few months ago and I love it! I used to knit, but I like crocheting much better. I still have an unfinished scarf that my sister is offering to finish for me! I am also teaching two of my friends to crochet. One of them is cruising with the basic single crochet and the other still only knows how to chain. I made up a whole plan with 12 lessons to teach them. I'll teach 1 every time they come over! It works great! If you ever want to do someone a favor (or just make them be quiet and not give you a headache) teach them to crochet! Name: lynne Subject: patience Comment: i learned as a child from grandma. she couldn't read patterns so i couldn't either. about 20 years later i picked it up again and taught myself to read patterns. i've never been a patient person but crochet has taught me that taking my time and working through patterns is a very rewarding thing. i love making beautiful things and the calm feeling that crochet gives me. Name: Helen Subject: Left Handed Comment: My mother knit and crocheted beautifully and taught me when I was a little girl. Since she was right handed and I'm left handed, she sat across from me and had me "mirror" what she was doing. There was no awkwardness in learning to hold the hook or the yarn because I was doing it exactly how I "saw" it. It worked great and might be an idea for others who try to teach! I stopped doing handwork for a number of years, but as I got older arthritis in my hands drove me to take it up again. I enjoy creating afghans with Aran style motifs, but have not been able to find much in the way of patterns. So now I make up my own patterns. Wish I could show a pic here. They actually come out quite nice. Name: Donna Subject: patterns Comment: I taught myself to crochet when I was about 10 years old. About 20 years ago a friend got me hooked on the old crochet magazines. I'd go to yard sales, wonder thru thrift shops and flea markets looking for them. They have now become hard to come by. Then I came across this web site and have found patterns that I didn't have in all those pattern magazines I have. Keep up the work and I hope to be coming back to you for many years to come. Name: Donna Subject: Crochet as therapy Comment: In the past three years I've been in the hospital twice for surgery. I'd turn to crocheting to help me cope with the stress of worrying about the surgery. I've made so many afghans that I have enough for gifts for family and friends. I turned to this web site for the patterns and chose ones that were easy and I didn't have to really think about what I was doing. Name: Cheryl Doussept Subject: I tried to show my daughter how to knit and crochet Comment: Recently I tried to show my daughter how to knit and crochet but the problem is my daughter is special needs and to top it off she is left handed and that didn't work too well so I was at my local craft store and I came across some knitting looms so I bought them and I showed her how to knit on one she can do it by herself so far she has made a hat on the round loom and a doll blanket on the rectangular loom so here is my encouragement if any left handed have tried to knit or crochet and can't go to your local craft shop and ask for a knitting loom they are lots of fun and easy on the hands if you have arthritis also they are very easy to use just follow the step by step instructions that come with the loom happy crocheting to you all Name: Deb Subject: Hooked on Crochet Comment: Thank you for the wonderful patterns you display here. I have made many of them and am working on a baby afghan for my 4th grandchild now. I am a lefty and could never learn how to crochet when I was a little girl -- I could never hold the hook correctly in my right hand, so all I ended up with was a string of knots. I gave up and then when I was in my 20's my neighbor showed me how I could hold the hook with my right hand any way that felt comfortable to me. I just hold it like I was grabbing onto a stick. It worked! She showed me the granny square and I was off and crocheting like crazy and have been ever since -- 30 years later I can't wait until my granddaughters are old enough to show how to crochet. Your patterns are wonderful for beginners and experienced crocheters alike. Thank you for many hours of fun and for the beautiful handiwork you have inspired. Name: *drea Subject: I'm lovin' it! Comment: I learned to crochet as a child with my great-grandmother. Like most children it was only cool to do with her. I had forgotten everything and really wanted to start back up again, and my mother-in-law taught me 3 weeks ago how to start again. I was working on a pattern and didn't know how to do the stitch, so I GOOGLEd crochet stitches, and I found this site! I LOVE the videos that show you how to do the different stitches. I really appreciate the hard work that has been put into this web-site. In the last three weeks I've completed an afghan, 1/4 of another one, 3 scarves, and I'm excited to start my next project. I find myself not even thinking about snacking in the evening (which is even better.) Thank you again for your awesome work on this website!
