My grandmother taught me the basics (along with sewing and embroidery) and it was like a fire was lit inside me. I wanted to do every project I could get my hands on. I spent all of my allowance on yarn and tools. All I ever asked for for Christmas and my birthday was craft supplies. However, when I started junior high school, I was teased and made fun of. Not only was I the "nerdy" kid, now I was the "old lady", wearing sweaters and scarves that I made. So I stopped because of my desperate desire to fit in. I moved a couple of years later and I had no friends in my new neighborhood. I started to crochet and embroider and sew again but only at home. It wasn't until my very first new friend urged me to be myself and let my talent flourish that I let my favorite hobby "out of the closet". ha ha ha. Even though people taunted me at first, I had a friend who loved my work and begged me to make her and her family Christmas gifts and such. I stopped caring what other people thought and I was never happier. In the summer of my junior year at high school, I did a study abroad program for college. It was hard at first because I had horrible jet lag for a week but crochet kept me from boredom and insanity. Now I can't think of a time when i didn't want to crochet and I strongly urge young people out there who crochet to just be yourself and let your talents flourish. It will save you from insanity, boredom, and being ordinary. Name: Bobbi Somerday Subject: Crocheting Comment: When I was very young, I was extremely hyperactive. My poor grandmother, who babysat me everyday, was at her wits end with me. One day she came toward me with what I thought was "string" to tie me down. She sat me down and taught me how to crochet. She had the paatience of a saint. That was 50 + years ago. I still crochet to this day. Crocheting is soothing and relaxing. Especially after a stressful day at work. The only draw back is one person can use just so many afghans. Ask my children! Then I started making afghans, with matching slippers, for a local Nursing Home, initially to distribute to their residents at Christmas. Now I make them all year round. I get such a wonderful feeling knowing that I can help bring warmth and happiness to people, who in all probability, I will never get to meet. I also just recently became a blanketeer for Project Linus. Happy crocheting. Name: Sue Subject: crocheting Comment: I have wanted to crochet for many years but getting it right by self teaching from books just didn't work for me. A few months ago I bought Crochet made easy-an interactive CD-ROM and it helped a lot. By watching someone actually doing the stitches and being able to watch it over and over as needed finally made sense. I have made one large afghan and three different size baby afghans in the past few months. The ripple pattern, though, is giving me fits. But I am gonna keep on trying till I get it right! So far all my stuff is done in straight rows, either single or double crochet. But I love it!!!! Boy or girl, man or woman--I think it is a very good way to put aside your troubles for awhile. Name: Jennifer Subject: I taught myself Comment: Wow when I hear people saying how young they were when they learned and the special stories accompanying it mine is rather boring. I am 37 yrs. old and I just taught myself to crochet by reading books 7 months ago. I was watching a woman at my son's basketball game knit and I thought it was cool but looked hard so I said hey I want to do the other thing with one needle. the lady said "you're talking about crocheting, it's hard to do that" Well me feeling like there's nothing too hard for me to do bought a book and started trying. the first thing I made was supposed to be a scarf, it was big in spots, little in others, more to the right in sections, more to the left in others, what a sight it was. I didn't give up though. I stopped old ladies at Walmart buying yarn and any craft store I saw crocheting I asked questions all of it sttll seemed foreign to me. But out of the blue one day I was attempting a pattern I saw and it clicked. I actually was doing it, straight too, it was only crooked when the pattern called for it to be crooked. I make all kinds of stuff now. Ponchos are my favorite. I made complete sets with the hats scarves you name it. I can't wait to show off this basketball season with all my beautiful crocheted ensembles. If I can learn anyone can, good luck ;-) Name: Cheryl in Alabama Subject: LOVE TO CROCHET! Comment: I guess like most people I was taught to crochet at a very young age, but I wasn't taught by my Mother or Grandmother. A lady I babysat for taught me how to crochet doilies. My Mother is a wonderful seamstress and does beautiful embroidery but she could never get the hang of crocheting. Even now that I have tried to teach her. I stopped crocheting a long time ago because of work and raising kids. Then several years ago I remarried a man with 2 kids of his own. A boy and girl along with my 2 girls my hands were full. So a few years ago my teenage step- son came home from a visit with his mother and had a small ball of yarn and an afghan crochet hook trying his best to crochet. I showed him how to make a chain and a few stitches but he lost interest very quickly. But it sparked my interest like a wild fire. So for the last several years I have been going at it like a mad woman. I have tried so many differnt patterns and yarn types. One of my daughters moved out on her own and I finally have my CRAFT ROOM ! Yeah. I love the look on friends faces when I give them a gift. Crocheting will never go out of style!! I love it!! Name: Mary E Hickey Subject: Crocheting Comment: I have been crocheting for about 15 years . I was taught how to crochet by a friend of mine that I used to work with.We would crochet during our breaks, she was right handed and I am left handed. I love to crochet because I like to make things and it is also very relaxing. I have been trying to read patterns ,but I am still having a little trouble reading them,I won't give up though.I have made pot holders, afghans, dresses for liquid soap, hot pads, and cozies for can sodas.I can sit and crochet for hours. Name: Dan Subject: Im a boy too Comment: Actually haha im 24 years old and learned very basic crochet from my grandmother when i ws about 5 or so. I even have her old hooks and a ball of yarn from then, and now i lerned more and i love it..its addicting. I want to make a blanket for my friends new baby...im trying but its hard! Name: Morgan Subject: YOU CAN DO IT! Comment: IM 5 YEARS OLD AND I TAUGHT MYSELF! IF I CAN DO IT, ANYONE CAN! Name: Iliana in Tampa Subject: Don't give up! Comment: I learned to crochet by watching my co-workers during our lunch hour. They were a small group who got together on on a weekly basis to share their patterns and show off their beautiful work. A friend of mine was having a baby and I wanted to make her a blanket. Thanks to Rosemarie, Trini and Leanne for your patience and support. I have been crocheting for over two years and I love it. It's very relaxing and not difficult to learn. If you are just starting, don't give up!! Name: Aline Subject: I see what Mom couldn't. Comment: As a child I watched my Mother crochet and knit and never see the things she made. Mom lost her sight in 1962, 2 years before I was born, but that didn't stop here from getting married, raising 2 children (I'm the oldest), and knitting and crocheting. I have some of the things she made as a child carefully wrapped and kept in boxes for my daughter on her wedding day. Name: jason Subject: boys Comment: I just wanted to say, I am an 18 year old guy. My grandma taught me to crochet when I was 6, and ever since I started high school, I have dealt with teasing. I do a lot of crocheting, and always have scraps. I make scarves. When winter comes, I take a bag to school, and give away scarves to people who look cold. half the time the person I give a scarf to has teased me before, so they are in shock. A lot of the time they apologize though. Name: Gini Subject: Addicted to Crocheting Comment: I had not crocheted for years and last November my husband (an elementary principal) suggested that I try it again. He reminded me that I used to crochet an afghan in only two days. I tried a crochet rose to wear on blazers, etc. He was surprized and thrilled. He had me crochet one for everyone of our sisters, nieces, etc. He even had me make some as a gift for his Parent Council, Volunteers, Teachers, etc. I am now enjoying it and even made a bridal purse for my niece. I feel that it is a relaxing and thrilling project to be addicting! Name: Kelly Subject: crocheting Comment: I was taught to crochet by my Grandmother when I was about 10 yrs old; I am now 38. She taught me the basic stitches but didn't know how to read crochet patterns. So I only made blankets and pot holders until i turned 20 yrs old. I got married to my highschool sweet heart when I was 19. He went into the Marine's right out of highschool. We got married 1 yr after he went in. Being so young we didn't have much money to live on. Plus being new to the area it took time to meet people. So crocheting saved me from lonelyness and complete boredom. When we came home on leave to visit our families my husbands Aunt taught me how to read crochet patterns. I will always be so grateful to her for teaching me to do so. Because my talent soared after that. I would say ive been addicted for years now, but I consider this a great art and is so worth the time, it's so rewarding in many ways. I love to see someone smile when they recieve what I have made them. I could go on and on about how much I love to crochet and how I feel it's helped me though some real rough time's in my life. I also found out that my Great grandmothers were a great crocheter's t they made beautiful doilies and lace edgeing for sheets and pillow cases etc.. My grandmother gave me some of the things they had made her these items were made in the 30's 40's and 50's up until they passed away. my Grandma is 82 and I guess she felt it was time to pass them onto me. I felt so honored. So I put them in my hopes chest for safe keeping, I take them out when I want to look at them I just sit and study the stitches and try to learn from them. I'm so grateful to God for the given talent and the health to do this art. thanks for letting me share and also thank you for sharing so many great pattern's It's so much appreicated. thank you, Kelly Name: Diane Subject: Crochet is my Life Comment: My hands love to be kept busy. When I learned how to crochet it was in a homeschool elective class. I was 12. I am now 16. Four years of crocheting have produced: 14 baby blankets presented to expectiant mothers at church, they are the hit of all the baby showers. Hats and scarves for all my friends. A couch throw and pillows for my youth paster's wedding gift. My recent and upcoming projects are, selling hats and blankets at the church yard sale, making pillows as Christmas presents for my friends, and building a Hope Chest.
