Subject: Hooked on Crochet!
Comment: I too had struggled with learning how to crochet..being a lefty, even as a child the only thing I could pick up was the foundation chain.

Then I bought "I tought myself to crochet" at Wal Mart....it REALLY helped....that and some helpful ladies from CrochetPartners.org I was off and running!

Happily Hooking in MI!

Subject: My story...
Comment: My mom tried to teach me to crochet probably 20 times when I was young, but I just couldn't get it. I gave her baby blankets away to all my friends. Last year, one of my best friends became pregnant with twins. Mom was out of blankets, so I decided to learn. I bought myself the "I taught myself to crochet" book from Wal-Mart. It took me about 3 tries per stitch to get it. I got the blankets dome in time, and now I am addicted! I have about 15 projects to give away for Christmas this year. I recently bought a pair of knitting needles. I'm going to let Mom teach me this time.

Comment: I learned to crochet when I was nine years old. My mother had bought an instruction book, and was trying to learn. We were at a laundromat, and I picked it up and starting trying to make a chain stitch when she had become busy or discouraged with it.My dad is a minister, so when we had went on mission trips, there was a lady that we had spent sunday afternoon with who was working on an afghan stitched afghan. She was very patient with me, and slowly I learned. before long I spent every dime I had on yarn and supplies. I am almost 40 years old, and would love to become an instructor in this art. My family never sees me without a crochet project in my lap, whether it be a doily or an afghan. They all think of me as the Crochet Nut, and that's just fine. When Hurricane Rita was on its way towards us, I told my entire family that as long as I had yarn, my patterns, and a bottle of water, I was fine........of course they all had a good laugh. I am a registed/certified pharmacy technician...so instead of teaching at a school....i don't want to turn my passion for crochet into a career....i prefer to teach couch-side to friends, and family. So, all you folks out there, keep on stitching, grinning, and relaxing, it's good for ya!!!

Subject: My Love of Crochet...
Comment: I am an almost 39 year-old stay at home mom to two boys (and wife for 10 years!) and I learned a basic chain stitch from my mother when I was 10.
Then a family friend taught me a granny square...the rest is history...my evenings (after hubby and kids are asleep) are spent relaxing with hook in hand and yarn running through my fingers. I don't know what I'd do without crochet. I express myself in so many ways, sometimes to others' patterns and sometimes to stuff I just make up as I go along...those are the most exciting projects to make. I generally used to make baby shower gifts (sweater sets, layettes and blankets) and rarely have made anything for myself. My kids have "blankies" I made them, and so do all of my friends' kids. People tell me that the blankets I crochet turn out to be their kids favorite blankets and they can't go to sleep (or anywhere else for that matter) without them. I like to think that it is the love that I put into them that makes them that special. I recently began selling my crochet poncho sets on ebay and things are going well (most of the time). I'm currently working on a web journal and photo hosting site so I can share my finished projects with fellow crocheters...I'm glad that crochet isn't just for "grannies" any more! There are so many yarns out there I tell my husband that he should be glad its my only addiction (I really can get out of hand when I find a new yarn!). My most recent exciting moment came when I received a FREE ball of Bernat Disco in this awesome electric blue...its like fun fur with "bling"...I edged a shrug and hat with it...it turned out so cute! I am a true "yarnaholic" but I am not ashamed to admit it. Happy Hooking Ladies (and Gentlemen, too). I'm off to start on another project...

Subject: I love crocheting!!!!
Comment: I started crocheting a few years ago, making dresses for my music-box doll. I'm 15 now, and I feel lost if I have nothing to crochet! I still love making doll dresses for my younger sisters' dolls, but anything else if just as fun to make as well! I love this site!!!!

Subject: Returning Chrocheter
Comment: I love to chrochet. But, after having four kids, full time student, and divorce, I fell away, but...I am back. Our family reunions are the times I would chrochet either a baby blanket or full size afghan to donate to their auction. Now, I am starting to chrochet again just to give away to friends and family. This is a soothing craft that keeps your hands busy as to not be idle. In the wake of the hurricanes that have devestated the gulf coase, I realize that I have been given talents that I should expound up and not allow to become rusty. Afghans are so cozy and memorable. Take care and god bless...Janelle

Subject: New to Crocheting
Comment: I wanted to learn a kind of hand work which is portable, not necessarily expensive, and produces nice results for beginners. Crocheting just drew me in and I can now produce the basic stitches evenly and surprised my mother with a lap blanket. I am one of those who can just sew on buttons and do basic repairs. Crocheting makes me feel connected to my foremothers. It's also why I like to wash dishes by hand, do hand laundry, hang laundry on a rack to dry and make my meals "from scratch". My mother is getting to "the sitting time of life" and loves her "lap robe" even though it has all the features of a first project. It did take me a couple of months of practice to come up with even enough stitches to be able to give something away. I can tell it means a lot to her. She does absolutely beautiful handwork, designs quilts, teaches all sorts of handwork and I, being left-handed, barely made it through sewing class. So, here I am, middle-aged, and loving crocheting. I find I just pick it up whenever I can and find it really does away with restlessness. May be it is the cure for "idle hands are the devil's invitation". I can pray and think and even talk on the phone and still crochet! I find most folks love being given something tangible, and how nice to be new at something and still be able to give presents that look lovely. I am making place mats, pot holders, lap blankets, shawls, and and and... for Christmas presents.

I am very thankful for your website and all the supportive contributions. Many thanks and God bless you.

Subject: Closet Crocheter
Comment: I'm almost 20 and I learned to crochet when I was six. My grandmother taught me the basics (along with sewing and embroidery) and it was like a fire was lit inside me. I wanted to do every project I could get my hands on. I spent all of my allowance on yarn and tools. All I ever asked for for Christmas and my birthday was craft supplies. However, when I started junior high school, I was teased and made fun of. Not only was I the "nerdy" kid, now I was the "old lady", wearing sweaters and scarves that I made. So I stopped because of my desperate desire to fit in. I moved a couple of years later and I had no friends in my new neighborhood. I started to crochet and embroider and sew again but only at home. It wasn't until my very first new friend urged me to be myself and let my talent flourish that I let my favorite hobby "out of the closet". ha ha ha. Even though people taunted me at first, I had a friend who loved my work and begged me to make her and her family Christmas gifts and such. I stopped caring what other people thought and I was never happier. In the summer of my junior year at high school, I did a study abroad program for college. It was hard at first because I had horrible jet lag for a week but crochet kept me from boredom and insanity. Now I can't think of a time when i didn't want to crochet and I strongly urge young people out there who crochet to just be yourself and let your talents flourish. It will save you from insanity, boredom, and being ordinary.

Comment: When I was very young, I was extremely hyperactive. My poor grandmother, who babysat me everyday, was at her wits end with me. One day she came toward me with what I thought was "string" to tie me down. She sat me down and taught me how to crochet. She had the paatience of a saint. That was 50 + years ago. I still crochet to this day. Crocheting is soothing and relaxing. Especially after a stressful day at work. The only draw back is one person can use just so many afghans. Ask my children! Then I started making afghans, with matching slippers, for a local Nursing Home, initially to distribute to their residents at Christmas. Now I make them all year round. I get such a wonderful feeling knowing that I can help bring warmth and happiness to people, who in all probability, I will never get to meet. I also just recently became a blanketeer for Project Linus. Happy crocheting.

Comment: I have wanted to crochet for many years but getting it right by self teaching from books just didn't work for me. A few months ago I bought Crochet made easy-an interactive CD-ROM and it helped a lot. By watching someone actually doing the stitches and being able to watch it over and over as needed finally made sense. I have made one large afghan and three different size baby afghans in the past few months. The ripple pattern, though, is giving me fits. But I am gonna keep on trying till I get it right! So far all my stuff is done in straight rows, either single or double crochet. But I love it!!!! Boy or girl, man or woman--I think it is a very good way to put aside your troubles for awhile.

Subject: I taught myself
Comment: Wow when I hear people saying how young they were when they learned and the special stories accompanying it mine is rather boring. I am 37 yrs. old and I just taught myself to crochet by reading books 7 months ago. I was watching a woman at my son's basketball game knit and I thought it was cool but looked hard so I said hey I want to do the other thing with one needle. the lady said "you're talking about crocheting, it's hard to do that" Well me feeling like there's nothing too hard for me to do bought a book and started trying. the first thing I made was supposed to be a scarf, it was big in spots, little in others, more to the right in sections, more to the left in others, what a sight it was. I didn't give up though. I stopped old ladies at Walmart buying yarn and any craft store I saw crocheting I asked questions all of it sttll seemed foreign to me. But out of the blue one day I was attempting a pattern I saw and it clicked. I actually was doing it, straight too, it was only crooked when the pattern called for it to be crooked. I make all kinds of stuff now. Ponchos are my favorite. I made complete sets with the hats scarves you name it. I can't wait to show off this basketball season with all my beautiful crocheted ensembles. If I can learn anyone can, good luck ;-)
