Subject: Toddler's Pony Tail Hat
Comment: I'm 65 and learned to crochet from my favorite aunt, Martha. When I was small she made one of these hats for me and I still have it in my crochet collection. I have duplicated it for several young girls and they all loved it as much as I did. I'm so happy to see this pattern and the photo is wonderful. It brings back many wonderful memories.

Subject: This website is great!
Comment: I just started to crochet like 4 days ago! I'm 23 and just starting out in life (apartment, low income job, stressful stuff) and I've realized that crocheting helps my nerves. It takes my mind off the negative that surrounds me. I've already made my first double crochet coaster and I feel SO accomplished. So I want to say that I greatly appreciate to the people that created this website and to everyone that keeps it going. Thanks for all the advice!

Comment: I have been crocheting since I was 6. I am 52yrs old now and have been living in Africa for the past 26yrs. I have felt pretty isolated out here and crochet has helped maintain my sanity. Unfortunately no one crochets here and they think I am pretty strange to spend all my free time on crochet. I have a large collection of crochet books and love doing challenging floral patterns particularly doilies with cotton thread. I am presently working on a floral doily from a pattern sent to me from Vintage Crochet. Its an old pattern from the 40's by Coats and Clark. I also work as a medical practitioner at a busy mission hospital and crochet has helped me deal with many stressful situations. My daughter loves Tatting and has just sent me a beautiful doily for my coffee table. Just found your site today and its great to know that so many people love to crochet too!!!

Comment: I am a long-time crocheter and have heard of it from my older sister. She taught me how to chain, then stopped and forgot how to do anything else. So (a long time later) I did a little bit of internet work and learn how to do a lot more stuff. I discovered I love to make plushies, but I hate doing things off of patterns. I mostly look at something then get ideas then make up my own patterns. I discovered while making a teddy bear, that I am very impatient and always want to see my finished work. This has made my dolls uneven and messy. but on this teddy bear I turned a new leaf and took my time. This is one of the best dolls I have ever made. I am 12 years old and have been crocheting since I was 6. When ever I am bored I am glad I have my hook and yarn with me. I feel bad for my sister for stopping crocheting 'cause it's the funnest and probably the greatest yarn making-things-into....ness evah.

Subject: Crochet "mishaps"
Comment: I have only been crocheting for a few years. The person who taught me only knew how to do a few stitches and only straight line projects. I have a lot of trouble following patterns but my recent mishap turned out to be a blessing in disguise! I was trying to make a hexagon that resembled a granny square (which I haven't mastered)and instead ended up with a duodecagon.

I forgot my main crochet project at my parent's home and ended up making a doll with my messed up gauge. The colorful duodecagon was immediately used as an overcoat for the doll that began life as a gauge for another project.

I'm going to finish the doll and present it to my mother as her "granddaughter" as her gag gift this Christmas.

So, if you're reading this, need some inspiration because you've gone wrong with something in the pattern, don't throw it out!

Liz

Subject: Old New Crochet-er
Comment: I am almost 50 and learning to crochet. I have bought about 100 different yarns and have made one scarf - ha! I think I am afraid of failure. I now have about 10 books on learning to crochet. Maybe I'll get past the single chain one of these days! :-)

Subject: Crochet hints from an inexperienced? Ya, right!
Comment: I'm thirteen, and have been crocheting for only a few months. Firstly, I would like to thank the people who run this site and to the people who posted about using a soda bottle to keep skeins of yarn. That was a very helpful hint. Secondly, I do recommend that you keep your yarn out of reach from any young children (siblings or otherwise!) who might unravel the project. I learned that lesson about a year ago when I was knitting a scarf and my baby brother got to it! I'll leave you to figure out what happened next! I found that using an old backpack, one that you never use anymore, helps a lot for storing materials. I have one that has two inside pockets with one large compartment, as well as three or four outer pockets. I keep my hooks in the smallest pocket inside, along with my yarn-cutter and tapestry needles. I keep my yarn in the large compartment, keeping the project(s) that I am currently working on at the top. Hope this helps! Becca

Comment: I love to crochet! My mom taught me when I was four and had to spend a lot of time at the Shriner's Hospital for Children in Chicago. Once I got better, I kept it up here and there. Then I got cancer, had a baby, and a hysterectomy in about a three year time frame. Crocheting is a better painkiller than morphine! I got to be so accomplished that now that I'm in remission and a stay-at-home-mom, I crochet in my spare time and sell my projects! when I'm not doing family stuff. My dad, husband, brothers, and father-in-law all demand new sweaters for christmas every year. I'm even teaching my four year old son to crochet! He's using scrap blocks to make his own school sweater this year. But he still wants the dinosaur one we saw on here, too.

Subject: Preemie crochet
Comment: Okay, I'm back. The very strange 10-year old from Oregon. I've just recently found that it is very nice crocheting preemie items. They're nice and small, so I finish them quickly, which I like. I don't have any preemies that I know personally, but I'm donating the things to my local hospital. It makes me feel very happy and helpful inside, and I get to crochet. I really recommend preemie crochet.

Subject: CROCHET ADDICT
Comment: I THINK I'M A CROCHET ADDICT! I CAN'T SEEM TO LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT BRINGING A BAG OF YARN & HOOKS WITH ME. WE WENT ON A TRIP & I HAD TO STOP AT BEN FRANKLIN'S STORE TO BUY SOME YARN & HOOKS! IT'S NOT THAT I'M GOOD AT IT, I JUST LOVE TO CROCHET. IF I'M IN A RESTAURANT & MY "STASH" IS IN THE CAR OUTSIDE, I THINK ABOUT IT AT LEAST TWO OR THREE TIMES. AM I WEIRD OR WHAT? I USED TO BE A KNITTER, BUT RECENTLY SWITCHED TO CROCHET AND I'M GLAD I DID! I MADE UP ANOTHER NEW STITCH: IT'S AS TALL AS A TRIPLE C. BUT THICKER SO THERE IS NOT AS MUCH SPACE BETWEEN THE STITCHES. ALSO I DO A DOUBLE, HALF DOUBLE. IT WOULD BE PERFECT FOR A WARM BLANKET/LAPGHAN. THANKS SO MUCH FOR READING MY TWO CENTS. I LIKE READING YOUR TIPS & IDEAS. LOVE, BYE. PHYLLIS CRUTCHMAN

Subject: Crochet Therapy
Comment: Mom taught me to single crochet when I was about 12. I didn't get the hang of projects due to lack of patience. When I had my daughter, I turned to crochet to make her a baby blanket. I stuck with it as it was a hobby I could afford on a hourly salary. Over the years I've taken informal lessons from friends who were good at it. I'm not too bad now, but still not an expert. In the fall and winter I do afghans, throws, hats, and scarves. In the spring I turn to baby blankets, booties, and sweaters. In summer when the Georgia heat is too much for heavy projects, I do cotton dishcloths and tote bags. It's a source of happiness and comfort for me year 'round whether I'm doing it to give away or keep.

Subject: Crochet is fun!!!:-)...
Comment: I taught myself to crochet a long time ago with an old crochet book from my grandmother. I LOVE crocheting because it is fast, simple, and relieves my stress. I love making things for my family members. I've made scarves, hats, shawls, even a small ripple afghan for my dorm room. My interest in crochet has led me to other pursuits as well- I taught myself to knit and to make beaded jewelry. Crochet is a great way to relax and to make gifts for family members on a budget. I am interested in trying my hand at an antique pattern, possibly from the Victorian era. My advice to anyone trying out crochet for the first time:- 1. Use good lighting when reading the patterns 2. Get books that come with illustrations 3. Use a simple acrylic yarn for your first couple of projects- the fancier yarns with fuzzies and ribbons can be tricky to work with, and you may not be able to see your stitches. 4. I recommend starting off with a simple project, like a scarf or a dishcloth- don't try to do too much at once. 5. Use a plastic yarn needle for finishing off projects- metal ones tend to snag on yarns that are like 4 ply worsted weight. 6. Keep your hooks organized (you can probably even crochet a case for your hooks) 7. Keep your odds and ends of yarn; you never know when they may come in handy for making a pom pom or something 9. Have a healthy imagination- go wild!!!:-)...

Subject: new stitch
Comment: i think i made up a new stitch!! i named it "twister". it looks like a little tornado. i made a foundation row, chain 3 & turn, dc in 2nd st, skp 1 st, 1dc in next st, yo & take hook around (from frnt to back) the dc you just made, pick up yarn from behind & bring it up even with the same dc, do this 2 times leaving yarn on the hook. now ch1 to connect all together at the top. done! skip 2 sts and dc as many times as you want between "twister" sts. i hope this is clear. i was trying to do the bean st when i accidentally made a twister. i had to look up the bean st again to do it right. thanks for reading my comment!
